What is counted, anonymously

When measurement is on, each event below is added to an hourly counter on our own server. Events carry no ID and cannot be linked to each other or to you. Nothing is stored on your device.

• Page views: the page, the domain of the site that linked here (never the full address), screen size band and browser language.
• Searches: the words you search for, how many results they gave (in bands), and the filters you apply. Please do not type personal data into the search box.
• Which result you open and its position, clicks to a source or its raw data, copied citations and downloads of the catalogue files.
• From the server: the country and region the hosting network reports for the connection, the type of network (university, company, public body, home or mobile provider, cloud) and, only for universities, companies and public bodies, the name of the organisation that owns the network. Your IP address is used for that lookup at the moment of the visit and is never stored.
• Requests from search engines and AI services, counted by the name of the service and the page requested.

Retention

Hourly counters are deleted after 90 days. Daily totals, which contain no visitor-level data, are kept to show long-term trends.

What you tell us

If you request a commercial licence or tell us how you use the catalogue, we keep what you send for that purpose only.
