Licence and commercial use
Open Well Data is free for learning and research. Companies that use the catalogue, or put the code inside closed-source products or services, need a commercial licence; evaluation licences are free.
| What | Licence | What you may do |
|---|---|---|
| Catalogue: records, verification, channel dictionary, coverage and unit alerts | CC BY-NC 4.0 | Copy, adapt and share for non-commercial purposes, with credit |
Code: the owd package and this site | AGPL-3.0 | Use, study, change and share; if you distribute it or run a modified version as a network service, share your source under the same licence. Closed-source use needs a commercial licence |
| Data held by each source | The provider's own licence | As stated on each record page |
What counts as commercial
This is how we read the licence. It clarifies CC BY-NC 4.0 and does not change it. When in doubt, ask.
- Commercial: use mainly for commercial advantage or payment: inside a company's operations, products or services, paid consulting, and research a company funds to serve its business.
- Not commercial: personal study, teaching, academic research and papers not commissioned by a company, public-sector research and non-profit work.
Commercial licence
Ask through danieldelgadouriarte.com. A free, non-exclusive evaluation licence with an end date is available on request; after it ends, commercial terms apply.
